WBO Appeal and the Mandatory Impasse
Denzel Bentley is fighting an administrative battle outside the ring to protect his middleweight championship. The Londoner has lodged an official appeal with the WBO after the sanctioning body ordered him to make an immediate mandatory defence against Cuba's Yoenli Hernandez.
Bentley is already locked in to face Shane Mosley Jr on November 7 at the Copper Box Arena in London, featured on the undercard of the Chris Billam-Smith vs Cheavon Clarke bill. With purse bids previously called for the Hernandez bout, Bentley is seeking clearance to proceed with Mosley Jr as an approved voluntary defence rather than surrender his belt or be stripped.
The Argument for a Voluntary Defence
Sanctioning body rules typically allow a champion a nine-month window from winning the title before an uncompromising mandatory challenge is enforced. Bentley contends that his camp had already scheduled the voluntary defence before the mandatory edict disrupted their plans.

"We already thought we were fighting a voluntary defence before the end of the year and put things in place for that. This has been thrown on us," Bentley stated. "I don't want to vacate and I don't want to be stripped of my title. But I have to move forward in my career and I cannot wait around for people to make decisions for me."
Bentley insists the legal and procedural basis of his appeal remains sound despite the complexities introduced by the purse bid process, maintaining that the championship should officially remain at stake in London.
Shane Mosley Jr: Physical Stakes at the Copper Box
The pending appeal directly impacts the stakes for Shane Mosley Jr. Ranked No. 6 by the WBO, the American contender earned his position through a high-impact stoppage victory over Serhii Bohachuk. Mosley brings relentless forward pressure and sustained punch output, presenting a demanding physical test inside the pocket.
Bentley expects a punishing, high-attrition encounter on November 7:
- Shane Mosley Jr: Enters ranked sixth with momentum from his stoppage of Bohachuk, relying on high work rate, durable conditioning, and heavy combinations.
- Denzel Bentley: The defending titleholder aiming to preserve his status and establish leverage in the middleweight division before addressing mandatory commitments.
"He's a tough guy, he's got a lot of heart and it's going to be a tough fight," Bentley said of Mosley. "He's a workhorse, he's very fit, he throws a lot of punches."
What Lies Ahead
The WBO's ruling on the appeal will determine whether the November 7 bout at the Copper Box Arena serves as an official world championship defence or a high-stakes non-title clash. Should the appeal succeed, the winner will likely face Hernandez in a mandated defence early next year.
