Jarrell Miller (38) is positioning himself for a WBA world heavyweight title opportunity against current champion Murat Gassiev. While the WBA has clarified that Miller is not currently a mandatory challenger, both camps have expressed interest in a potential matchup.
Gassiev, who was elevated to WBA champion following Oleksandr Usyk’s decision to vacate his belts in June, confirmed his willingness to face the American. "Yes, if there is an offer regarding Jarrell Miller, we are of course interested," Gassiev stated. The Russian champion noted that if current WBA No. 1 contender Moses Itauma pursues the IBF path—specifically his upcoming fight against Filip Hrgovic on August 19—Miller, currently ranked No. 2, would likely become the mandatory challenger.
Strategic Considerations for the Division
For Miller, a title fight would represent a significant career milestone, coming over seven years after his high-profile 2019 bout against Anthony Joshua was cancelled due to a positive drug test. Miller recently secured a points victory over Lenier Pero in April, keeping him active in the heavyweight rankings.
Gassiev, 32, is prioritizing unification bouts to consolidate his standing in the division. He has identified WBC champion Agit Kabayel as a primary target for a unification contest. However, Gassiev remains open to fulfilling mandatory obligations if a unification deal cannot be reached in the immediate term.
"We are targeting fights that make sense both financially and for my career progression," Gassiev added. The champion is also monitoring the outcomes of other major divisional bouts, including the upcoming contest between Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley for the WBO belt.
