Manchester Coach Reveals Treatment Timeline After January Relapse

British boxing trainer Joe Gallagher has confirmed he will undergo surgery in September after scans earlier this year revealed a recurrence of cancer in his liver. The Manchester cornerman, who previously overcame stage four bowel and liver cancer, shared the update during an appearance on the Toe2Toe Sky Sports Boxing podcast.

Gallagher had initially received the all-clear in September last year, allowing him to travel to Las Vegas in the corner of prospect Mikie Tallon ahead of the Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford event. However, routine cardiovascular scans in January detected that the disease had returned to his liver tissue.

Seven Chemotherapy Cycles Clear Path for Operation

Initial medical assessments deemed the secondary tumors inoperable. To counter the spread, Gallagher completed seven aggressive cycles of chemotherapy aimed at reducing the mass around critical vascular pathways.

"There's four areas of the liver that has got cancer, three of them can be cut out, one of them they've got to burn it out, but that one is sitting on a main artery that's carrying blood from the feet to the heart," Gallagher explained. "That's the one that needed to shrink a little bit, which it has."

With the treatment successfully reducing the tumor burden, surgeons have cleared him for an operation in September. Gallagher confirmed he intends to return to the gym by early October to resume corner duties with his stable.

Mikie Tallon Targets Big Card Appearances

Flyweight prospect Mikie Tallon continues his development under Gallagher's system, having recently secured a first-round stoppage victory over Argentinian Olympian Leandro Jose Blanc via a calculated shot to the liver.

Tallon expressed his ambition to secure a slot on major upcoming bills, including the mooted Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua clash. While Gallagher prepares for his clinical procedure, his fighters maintain active training schedules in Manchester ahead of autumn matchmaking.

The canvas beneath the dried blood was the dull grey of wet slate.
