Decentralized Training Hub Opens in Northern Mindanao

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has finalized the development of a dedicated Regional Training Center (RTC) for the national boxing team at the Bukidnon Sports and Cultural Complex (BSCC) in Malaybalay, Bukidnon. The facility shifts the preparation base for Mindanao-born national athletes away from the centralized altitude camp in Baguio City back to their home region.

PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio confirmed the completion, noting the structural shift will recalibrate regional logistics. Under this spatial distribution model, the Baguio City training site will gradually narrow its intake strictly to boxers from Northern Luzon, while the Malaybalay facility absorbs talent from across Mindanao.

Facility Specifications and Multi-Sport Allocation

The establishment of the Bukidnon RTC forms part of a broader national directive under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to construct localized sports centers through Local Government Unit (LGU) partnerships.

The BSCC structural footprint incorporates multiple high-performance training sectors:

  • A 3,000-seat indoor gymnasium designated for boxing, badminton, basketball, and martial arts disciplines.
  • An Olympic-size swimming and diving aquatics sector.
  • A standard track and field oval alongside a full-sized football pitch.
  • Support facilities for karate, cycling, and sepak takraw.

Future development phases at the complex include four tennis courts, a softball/baseball diamond, an open multi-use field, a cultural auditorium, and an athletic museum.

ABAP Launches Technical and Coaching Pipeline

To establish baseline operational standards at the new base, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) initiated an accreditation module for regional technical personnel. The inaugural program brought together 65 coaches and ring officials from Northern Mindanao and surrounding sectors.

ABAP President Marcus Manalo highlighted that technical competency and standardized ring supervision remain essential structural variables for athlete progression and long-term Olympic qualification cycles.
