Shane Fury Jr European gold came in Trabzon, Turkey, at the Under-15 European Championships, where England Boxing's 70kg entry won the division and the nephew of Tyson Fury left with a title on his first international tournament. The result sits alongside medals for relatives of Daniel Dubois and Ricky Hatton, three famous surnames spread across three weight classes and three different colours.

Shane Fury Jr European gold in Trabzon

Fury Jr entered the 70kg draw and received a bye into the quarter-finals. From there he beat Ukraine's Bohdan Moroz on a split decision, then took a unanimous decision over Moldova's Dan Florea in the semi-final to reach the final.

The gold came against Azerbaijan's Sarkhan Hakverdiyev, again on a split decision. Two of his three contests were settled by divided cards rather than a clear margin, which is the ordinary texture of under-15 boxing: bouts short enough that a single awkward round can tilt the whole verdict.

John Fury, Shane's grandfather, described the final as a test against a southpaw. "You dug in, knew what you had to do, fought a good southpaw, awkward kid and you got the job done," he wrote on social media, adding: "It's Fury DNA."

Tyson Fury hails his nephew's first international title

Tyson Fury posted a longer reaction after the final, calling the tournament the toughest in the world and stressing that his nephew had won it at the first attempt. "He deserves it, he's dedicated, he puts his life and soul into this sport," he wrote. "He is the only person who I know who doesn't care about anything else."

He closed with a look ahead rather than a celebration: "Wait until you get to see Shane Fury Jr and wait until you are introduced to the real Shane Fury Jr over the years. Next gen - let's go!"

Solomon Dubois takes 60kg silver

Solomon Dubois, the younger brother of Daniel and Caroline Dubois, won silver at 60kg. He opened with two unanimous decisions, then beat Azerbaijan's Sunay Azimov 4-1 to reach the final.

The final went the same way, in reverse. Russia's Mikhail Novikov took it 4-1, leaving Dubois with silver in a division where the margins were narrow at the last step rather than across the week.

Lola Hatton bronze and England's other golds

Lola Hatton, the daughter of Matthew Hatton and niece of former world champion Ricky Hatton, took bronze at 60kg. She lost her semi-final to Russia's Kristina Okhlopkova on a split decision.

England's gold haul extended beyond the Fury family. Bilal Iqbal beat Ukraine's Vitalii Arovych in the men's 75kg final, Millie Rolfe won the women's 44kg final and Brogan Darrie claimed women's 40kg gold.

For three of the medalists the surname arrives before the record does, and that is the awkward part of a tournament like this one. Hatton and Dubois and Fury will be measured against relatives for years. In Trabzon they were measured against children their own age, over three-minute bouts, and the cards are all that count.
