Hoops Take Control at Parkhead
Celtic took a massive step toward returning to the UEFA Champions League group stage with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Austrian champions LASK in the first leg of their play-off tie at Parkhead.
After crashing out at this very hurdle 12 months ago, did Celtic look nervous? Early on, maybe. But thanks to sensational strikes from summer additions Benjamin Nygren and Camilo Duran, the Scottish champions built a commanding cushion to take into next week's decider.
Early Scares and Disallowed Goals
Things could have turned messy inside the first minute when Moses Usor lashed a shot into the top corner for LASK, only for the assistant's flag to rescue the hosts for offside. Minutes later, Samuel Adeniran skipped past Cameron Carter-Vickers but dragged his effort wide.
Celtic shook off the sluggish start and broke the deadlock on 27 minutes. Kieran Tierney picked out Nygren, who curled a sublime first-time effort into the top right corner. LASK thought they had equalised on 35 minutes when Adeniran headed home, but the offside flag intervened once again to frustrate the visitors.
Duran Doubles Up in Style
Just three minutes after surviving that second scare, Celtic struck again. A cleared Tierney cross dropped kindly to Duran outside the box, and the Colombian forward blasted home his first goal at Celtic Park to make it 2-0 before the interval.
LASK refused to lie down in the second half, forcing Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo into a brilliant point-blank stop to deny Usor on 62 minutes. But Celtic showed ruthless edge on the counter just five minutes later. Duran exchanged passes with Nygren during a sweeping move before calmly guiding a side-footed finish into the far corner for his second of the evening.
What McGregor Said and What Comes Next
"We are trying to get the club in the Champions League. Only halfway there but fantastic performance. We have to finish it off next week," said Celtic captain Callum McGregor. "[Duran] had two unbelievable finishes, we have seen it in pre-season. He is a real threat. The thing I love about him is he is always chasing back."
The sides head to Linz for the return leg on Tuesday, where Celtic will look to wrap up aggregate victory and confirm their spot among Europe's elite.
