Kulusevski injury return headlined Tottenham's first Premier League win of the season as Spurs beat Coventry 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The winger came off the bench in the 85th minute after 526 days out with a knee setback. James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies scored. Tottenham vs Coventry kicked off with the hosts bottom of the table and winless across their opening six league games.
Kulusevski injury return ends 526 days out
Kulusevski had not played since the knee injury that cost him 526 days. He entered with Spurs 2-1 ahead and the closing minutes plus stoppage time remaining. Sky Sports reported the mood inside the stadium rose again when the fan favourite came on.
The substitution closed a long rehabilitation period rather than opening a new question. Spurs had spent the week in Marbella before this fixture and arrived with one point from six matches. The win, and the return, arrived on the same evening.

Maddison links the £300m squad
Maddison made his first competitive start since May 2025 and scored in the 14th minute, curling into the top corner against the club where his professional career began. Sky Sports' Patrick Rowe noted that Maddison dropped deep, found pockets of space, threaded passes for Dominic Solanke's runs and threatened from the half-spaces with his crossing.
"Maddison looks like the piece that could link the £300m pieces of this Spurs puzzle together," Rowe wrote. "Keeping him fit and firing is now essential to the club building on this game."
Jamie Carragher, speaking on Monday Night Football, framed the performance around the No 10 role. "James Maddison definitely has more panache than Conor Gallagher in that No 10 position," he said. "When you're a player with an injury like that, there will be a fear: will you ever come back or will you be the same player? There is still a long way to go, but he still has a bit of magic in his boots."
Tottenham vs Coventry key moments
- 14: Maddison curls the opener into the top corner on his return to the starting line-up.
- 18: Dominic Solanke turns in Andy Robertson's cross, but the offside flag is already up.
- 49: Jack Rudoni forces the equaliser after driving into the Tottenham penalty area.
- 58: Omar Marmoush restores the lead with his first goal for the club, struck into the far corner.
- 85: Kulusevski returns after 526 days out.
- 90+6: Ben Davies scores with the outside of his boot.
Table position and the Chelsea test
Rudoni's equaliser came four minutes into the second half and put a known pattern back in play. No side has dropped more points from winning positions at home in the Premier League since the start of the 2024/25 season than Spurs, at 30. Marmoush's strike in the 58th minute answered it before Davies added the third in stoppage time.
The result moves Spurs level on six points with Coventry and above them on goal difference into 16th, having started the fixture rock bottom. The next fixture is against London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
