Mal Benning Named Asian Football Awards Pioneer
Veteran defender Mal Benning will receive the Football Pioneer accolade at the sixth edition of the Asian Football Awards in London on September 29. The recognition comes after Benning hit the milestone of 500 professional appearances last season on Valentine's Day—a rare achievement in English football.
Benning came through at Walsall under Dean Smith in 2012/13 before becoming a fan favourite across more than 250 matches for Mansfield Town. He later sealed his legacy with Port Vale, scoring the final goal at Wembley in a 3-0 League Two play-off final victory over Mansfield in 2022.
"I don't care that it's me - it could have been anyone - but for the Sikh community, as well as South Asians in football, that was a massive step," Benning noted following that Wembley triumph.
Hamza Choudhury Stars on Sheffield United Debut
Midfielder Hamza Choudhury made an instant impact for Sheffield United, completing a full 90 minutes at right-back in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers on Transfer Deadline Day.
The Bangladesh international moved to Bramall Lane on a permanent deal, ending a 21-year association with Leicester City. During his time with the Foxes, Choudhury made 166 senior appearances, lifted the FA Cup in 2021, and captained the side during their 2023/24 Championship title campaign. The transfer reunites him with manager Chris Wilder, having previously played under him during a loan stint at Watford.
Mariam Mahmood Makes Wrexham History
Pakistan international forward Mariam Mahmood has broken new ground at Wrexham, becoming the first women's footballer ever added to the club's international honours board.
The 22-year-old former West Bromwich Albion attacker joins past club figures such as Joey Jones, Dai Davies, and Kieffer Moore. Mahmood is also just the second British South Asian player on the board, following former Wales international Neil Taylor. Since making her international debut during AFC Women's Asian Cup qualifying last year, Mahmood has scored three goals in six appearances for Pakistan.
Amit Bhatia Attends First Liverpool Match Post-Deal
Off the pitch, British Indian entrepreneur Amit Bhatia attended Anfield for Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest following an invitation from Fenway Sports Group principal owner John W Henry.
Bhatia is leading an investment syndicate—which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin—that has agreed to acquire a 38 per cent stake in Liverpool. Once the agreement is formally ratified, Bhatia will take a seat on the club's board as vice chairman.
