From Continental Silver to UAAP Leadership

When Fil-American winger Amyah Espanol returned to the Philippines, her sights were set on earning a place on the national team. Just one year after arriving in the country, the 5-foot-7 standout not only secured a silver medal with Gilas Pilipinas Women 3x3 at the 20th Asian Games, but has immediately channeled that international edge into a blazing start for Far Eastern University (FEU) in the UAAP women’s basketball tournament.

For Espanol, the grueling grind of representing the flag revealed a foundational truth of Philippine basketball: tactical execution only thrives when anchored by unyielding resolve.

“I think the Philippine side of it is playing with heart. I think it’s the main thing we learned. You know, we play with a lot of heart, a lot of aggressiveness,” Espanol said. “That’s our identity. And I think that’s what we’re bringing to our team in FEU now is just playing with a lot of heart, you know, being dogs.”

Transitioning from the Half-Court Arena to the Full Hardwood

Espanol built her foundation in the United States at Renaissance High School, where she posted 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals per contest before a collegiate stint at NCAA Division II program Davenport University. Her path to the Asian Games podium was forged through the FIBA 3x3 Nations League-Asia SEA Conference, powering the Philippines to qualification for the FIBA 3x3 Under-23 World Cup.

While scheduling conflicts kept her out of the World Cup in Wuhan, her half-court development alongside FEU and Gilas teammate Victoria Pasilang sharpened her perimeter instincts and defensive accountability.

“In 3x3, you can’t really hide, you know, you’re all on your own when it comes to defense,” Espanol explained. “So I think that’s what really helped me today.”

Sparking FEU’s Unbeaten 2-0 UAAP Opening Run

That defensive resilience paid immediate dividends on the UAAP stage. After opening their campaign with a 76-71 victory over the De La Salle Lady Archers, the Lady Tamaraws faced a stiff test against a reloaded University of the Philippines (UP) squad guided by head coach Eric Altamirano.

Espanol and FEU rallied back from a 15-point deficit to outlast the Fighting Maroons in overtime, 74-67, clashing directly with national teammates Kennan Ka and Marielle Vingno.

“UP is a really strong team. I’ve played with their players like Kennan Ka and Marielle Vingno. And I think this just shows that, you know, we’ve been working really hard. So no matter who we play, we just play 100 percent and it’s gotten us results so far,” Espanol noted.

With an undefeated 2-0 record in hand, Espanol and the Lady Tamaraws have proven that the battle-tested intensity forged on the international stage is setting a commanding standard for their UAAP campaign.
