TNT winger Calvin Oftana stood on the precipice of Philippine basketball history at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi, Japan. Had Gilas Pilipinas defended their continental crown, the 30-year-old forward would have become the first Filipino player since Caloy Loyzaga and Kurt Bachman in 1962 to secure back-to-back Asiad men’s basketball gold medals.

Instead, the national team endured a harrowing group-stage exit, culminating in a 105-61 blowout loss against China that extinguished the Philippines' title defense. South Korea eventually captured the gold medal with a 67-57 victory over host Japan, tying the Philippines for the second-most men's basketball titles in Asian Games history with five.

Pride Amid an Uphill Continental Campaign

Despite the abrupt elimination, Oftana expressed pride in the all-PBA lineup that stepped onto the hardwood under challenging circumstances.

“Sayang. Pero ‘yun nga, sabi ko, hindi araw-araw, Pasko,” Oftana said. “May mga times na gusto mong manalo pero hindi sumasang-ayon sa inyo.”

Called up as a late replacement after naturalized ace Justin Brownlee remained home to continue his recovery, Oftana emerged as the primary bright spot for the national squad. He opened the tournament with a 31-point outburst in an 89-85 defeat to Bahrain and finished the competition averaging 18.6 points per game. In the decisive loss to China, he was the sole Filipino player to score in double digits, finishing with 13 points.

“Ginawa ko lang naman ‘yung best ko roon,” Oftana added. “Nag-underperform man kami, hindi man kami nakapasok sa next round, I’m just proud na ni-represent namin ‘yung country with all our might, kung ano man ‘yung makakaya namin... na maglaro lang para sa bansa. And i-represent ‘yung mga Pilipino roon, at mga coaches at mga teammates ko.”

Explosive Return to PBA Action with TNT

Oftana swiftly translated his sharp international form back to the domestic stage on Wednesday. Making his first appearance since battling foot and calf injuries during TNT's seven-game Season 50 Commissioner's Cup Finals defeat in June, Oftana exploded for 31 points to guide TNT Tropang 5G to a decisive 116-92 victory over Terrafirma.

The win marked TNT's fifth of the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup campaign, pushing the franchise closer to a quarterfinal berth.

Fully recovered and unhindered by the physical ailments that compromised his previous postseason run, Oftana welcomed the fresh start on the court.

“Parang rookie year ko nga ulit,” Oftana remarked. “Happy na makalaro ulit. Happy ako na nakalaro na walang iniinda, walang masakit sa paa, sa legs ko. Thankful ako kay God na ibinalik niya akong healthy rito. Nandito ulit tayo para maglaro.”
