Bruno Fernandes Carrick talks clear the air before Chelsea trip

Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes met face-to-face at Manchester United's training ground on Tuesday, and the captain is expected to be in contention for Saturday's Premier League game at Chelsea. Fernandes was dropped for the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth after criticising Carrick's tactics following the 4-1 Champions League loss at Como. A full-squad meeting also took place, with players and staff accepting the team has underperformed this season.

Bruno Fernandes Carrick talks clear the air before Chelsea trip

Bruno Fernandes Carrick talks took place at Manchester United's training ground on Tuesday, with the club captain now expected to be in contention for Saturday's Premier League fixture at Chelsea. Sky Sports News reported the meeting as an open and frank discussion. Whether Fernandes apologised for his public criticism of the head coach is not known.

Fernandes was dropped and left as an unused substitute for the 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday. The individual meeting ran alongside a full-squad meeting, where players and staff restated that performances must improve immediately. Both sides accepted that the squad has underperformed this season.

Bruno Fernandes Carrick talks follow a public dispute

The dispute began after the 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. Fernandes questioned the staff's approach and said the decision not to press man-to-man handed the opposition too much of the ball.

"It's a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little space in behind," Fernandes said. "But sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confident... when you recover the ball the legs are, and the brain, much more difficult to make it work."

Asked whether tactics were to blame, he said: "That's on the manager and on the staff to see it, it's not on me. I just said, I think sometimes we have to be more brave on the pressure, trying to take a risk of getting that press very high and making them uncomfortable - as they did to us."

Carrick described the decision to drop his captain as "pure football". "Picking the team is always a difficult decision," he told Sky Sports. "We've got to make what we feel is the right one for the team to try to get the performance we want."

Sky Sports News reported on October 22 that Fernandes would not be stripped of the captaincy for his comments. At his pre-Bournemouth press conference the following day, Carrick refused to rule out disciplinary measures. "The most important thing for me is the team and the dynamics in the squad," he said. "Whatever the situation is, I will always do what is best for the football club."

Gary Neville says the captain let himself down

Gary Neville said Fernandes had damaged his own position with the timing and content of the interview. He compared it with previous United captains and said the response after a heavy away defeat, in front of supporters who had travelled, was the wrong one.

"Bruno can't press. To come out and whinge after the game about the manager's tactics, when you've just lost 4-1... I'm sorry, read the room, Bruno," Neville said. "He's basically stuck the knife into his manager."

Neville added that supporters were backing Carrick rather than calling for Fernandes to enter the game. He said Fernandes remains a player of proven quality for the club but had made an unnecessary intervention.

Lisandro Martinez set the October precedent

Fernandes was the second United player to criticise the club publicly in October. Lisandro Martinez questioned recruitment after the Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, saying he expected more from the technical director and "from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete".

Martinez was not dropped for the following fixture, playing 45 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Leeds. He was benched for the visit of Bournemouth. The two cases now form the reference point for how Carrick handles public dissent inside the squad.

What the Chelsea fixture will show

The measurable outcome is selection. Fernandes returning to the starting XI at Stamford Bridge would indicate the meeting closed the issue. A place on the bench again would indicate the manager is still applying a penalty.

Carrick has not said whether any disciplinary process is open. United travel to Chelsea with the squad-wide performance question unresolved and no stated deadline for improvement. The captaincy itself is not in dispute, per the October 22 reporting.
