Philippine football has lost one of its most transformative and respected figures. Renowned South Korean tactician Kim Chul-soo, affectionately known to generations of players and fans simply as Master Kim, has passed away in South Korea at the age of 74.

Kim was the master builder behind Far Eastern University (FEU)'s golden era, turning the Tamaraws into a powerhouse across the UAAP men’s, women’s, and high school boys’ divisions.
Sideline Presence and Club Success
Kim, a former defender for K League heavyweights Pohang Steelers, was impossible to miss on matchdays. Often stalking the touchline in sharp corporate attire, his tactical discipline and structured development programs set a benchmark for Filipino football.
Beyond his collegiate dynasty at FEU, Kim also tested his tactical mettle in the semi-pro and professional circuits, taking charge of Loyola Meralco Sparks and Manila Jeepney during their runs in the now-defunct United Football League (UFL).
Developing Icons: From Park Ji-sung to UAAP Champions
Before ever arriving in Manila, Kim already boasted an elite eye for talent. Early in his grassroots coaching career in South Korea, he reportedly worked with future Premier League stalwarts Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo.
In the Philippines, his youth development system churned out players who went on to dominate the local top flight, the national team pool, and collegiate tournaments. For Kim, football was never just about drills; it was about character and discipline.

Following the news of his passing, players and coaches across Philippine football shared emotional tributes honoring Kim's mentorship.
“I still find it hard to believe that you’re gone. You were more than just a football coach to me, you were a mentor, a teacher, and someone who helped shape the person and footballer I am today,” shared Arnel Amita, a Philippines Football League and Copa Paulino Alcantara winner who won back-to-back UAAP titles under Kim in Seasons 76 and 77.
Former Tamaraw standout and current FEU assistant coach Paolo Bugas also credited Kim with laying the foundation for his own coaching career:
“You changed our lives from the very beginning when we met you. We will always remember the good and bad moments we shared, the laughter, the memories, and even the times you scolded us during training... We will always carry your lessons with us, both on and off the field.”
A Lasting Footprint
While Master Kim has been laid to rest in South Korea, his tactical philosophy and emphasis on player character remain embedded in the DNA of FEU football and the wider Philippine football landscape.
