A New Era for the Tartan Army
Scotland have officially found their next boss. Former Monaco and Union Saint-Gilloise manager Sebastien Pocognoli has taken the reins on a two-year contract, stepping into the dugout to replace Steve Clarke.
The 39-year-old Belgian tactician arrives as a free agent following his departure from Monaco in June. Clarke stepped down after Scotland's World Cup campaign in the United States ended in the group stage with one victory from three matches. While Clarke took the nation back to the world stage for the first time since 1998, the Scottish FA have decided it is time for a fresh approach.
Who Is Sebastien Pocognoli?
If the name rings a bell, you might remember Pocognoli bombing up and down the left flank in English football. Capped 13 times by Belgium, the former left-back enjoyed playing stints across Europe before hanging up his boots:
- Playing Honours: Won the Eredivisie under Louis van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar (2009) and lifted the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège (2018).
- UK Stints: Made 21 Premier League appearances for West Brom Albion before heading to the Championship on loan with Brighton.
- Other Clubs: Featured for Genk, Hannover 96, and Union Saint-Gilloise.
After retiring at USG, Pocognoli quickly transitioned to coaching. He worked through the youth ranks with USG Under-21s, Genk Under-18s, and Belgium's U16 and U18 setups before taking the senior USG job in the summer of 2024. In a historic debut campaign, he delivered USG their first Belgian league title in 90 years and picked up the 2025 Belgian Coach of the Year award. He then moved to Monaco in October of last year, guiding them into Europe before departing on June 1.

"It's an honour to be asked to become the head coach of the Scotland national team," Pocognoli said. "When I first heard of the interest, I was immediately excited about the opportunity. Scotland's supporters are famous for their passion... Along with my coaching staff, I will do everything I can to give them a team to be proud of and build on the success that has been achieved already by my predecessor."
What’s Next for Scotland?
This marks Pocognoli’s first senior international role and only his third senior management job overall. There is no time for a slow transition either—he has confirmed that work begins immediately on squad preparation ahead of next month's UEFA Nations League camp.
