Group E Hosting Awarded to Cebu’s SM Seaside Arena

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has confirmed that Cebu City will host all Group E fixtures for the sixth and final window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers. Scheduled for Feb. 26 and March 1, the games will take place at the newly developed SM Seaside Arena, which features a seating capacity of 16,000 and a maximum event capacity of 25,000.

This assignment marks Gilas Pilipinas’ first home fixture outside the National Capital Region since February 2023, when the team played at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan against Lebanon and Jordan during the previous World Cup qualifying cycle.

Window 6 Match Schedule and Format

Mirroring the centralized triple-header format deployed during Window 4 at the Mall of Asia Arena, each matchday in Cebu will present three consecutive Group E encounters:

  • Feb. 26 (Day 1): Australia opens against Syria, followed by New Zealand facing Iran, with Gilas Pilipinas taking on Jordan in the evening slot.
  • March 1 (Day 2): Australia meets Iran in the opening game, New Zealand plays Jordan in the afternoon fixture, and Gilas Pilipinas concludes the window against Syria in the nightcap.

Group E Standings and Qualification Implications

The final window in Cebu will determine the final qualification standings for Group E. Through the first four windows, the table stands as follows:

  • Australia: 8-0 (16 points)
  • New Zealand: 6-2 (14 points)
  • Iran: 5-3 (13 points)
  • Jordan: 5-3 (13 points)
  • Philippines: 4-4 (12 points)
  • Syria: Sixth position

Sitting in fifth place at 4-4, coach Tim Cone’s squad faces a tight competitive margin behind Iran and Jordan (both 5-3). Prior to the home stand in Cebu, Gilas Pilipinas will travel to Malaysia in November for Window 5, where they are scheduled to play Syria on Nov. 27 and Iran on Nov. 29. The outcomes of the November window will directly shape the point requirements and qualification stakes for the final two games at SM Seaside Arena.
