Kai Sotto injury update leaves Gilas stint in doubt for qualifiers

Kai Sotto's availability for Gilas Pilipinas in the fifth FIBA World Cup Asia qualifying window is still undecided, with coach Tim Cone hoping the 7-3 center can face Syria on Nov. 27 and Iran on Nov. 29. Sotto has missed Altiri Chiba's last six B-League games with what the club calls poor physical condition, and his agent says there is no confirmed timeline. The Philippines is 4-4 and fifth in Group E with two windows remaining.

Gilas Pilipinas coach Tim Cone is hopeful that Kai Sotto can suit up in the fifth window of the FIBA World Cup Asia qualifiers, but the Kai Sotto injury update remains unresolved. The 7-3 center has missed Altiri Chiba's last six B-League games, and his agent says nothing is final about the Philippines vs Syria and Philippines vs Iran assignments on Nov. 27 and Nov. 29 in Seremban, Malaysia.

Kai Sotto injury update leaves knee clearance unclear

Altiri has listed Sotto out for six consecutive contests, attributing the absence to "poor physical condition." He continues to travel with the club and sits on the bench during games, and a team source said there is no structural injury. When he will be cleared to play is a separate question.

Sotto's agent, Tony Ronzone of the Los Angeles marketing and talent management firm The Team, said nothing is final on the Gilas stint.

"We don't know yet and we're waiting how his knee is getting better," Ronzone said. "No confirmed details and we'll have to wait."

Gilas Pilipinas sits fifth in Group E with two windows left

The Philippines is 4-4 in the six-team reconstituted Group E, behind Australia at 8-0, New Zealand at 6-2, and Iran and Jordan at 5-3 each. Only the top three from Groups E and F, plus the best fourth-placed team across both brackets, advance to Doha.

Eight slots are reserved for Asia and Oceania at the World Cup, scheduled for Aug. 27 to Sept. 12. Host Qatar holds an automatic ticket, leaving seven places for the qualifiers. If the eliminations ended today, Gilas would miss out after three straight appearances in Spain 2014, China 2019 and Manila 2023. A sweep of the next window would lift the record to 6-4.

Sotto has played only two games in these qualifiers, both in the third window, and both ended in Philippine wins. He posted 18 points and 14 rebounds in an 82-81 overtime escape against Jordan, then 13 points and 16 rebounds in a 68-56 win over Iran.

The final window moves to the SM Seaside Arena in Cebu, where Gilas faces Jordan on Feb. 26 and Syria on March 1. Syria sits at 2-6, but the report notes no opponent should be taken lightly.

Altiri Chiba's record shifts sharply with Sotto

Altiri is last in the B-League Eastern Conference at 3-9, yet the split is stark: 2-2 with Sotto available, 1-7 without him. The 24-year-old center is on his fourth B-League squad after Hiroshima, Yokohama and Koshigaya.

He sat out Altiri's first two games of the season, then played four in a row, averaging 12 points, 12 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 27 minutes while shooting 67.7 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from the line. His most recent outing was an 18-point, 12-rebound, five-assist performance in a 99-90 win over the Kawasaki Brave Thunders on Oct. 3.

What to watch before the Syria and Iran games

Altiri's next scheduled game is against the Akita Northern Happinets, and the club's advice on Sotto's availability will be the first concrete signal of his condition. The report also flags a practical factor: Altiri may hold him back as a precaution against injury.

Cone's hope is easy to understand. Sotto delivered double-doubles in both of his qualifying appearances, and the third-window victories over Jordan and Iran are the standard Gilas will try to repeat in the return matches. Without him, the frontline picture changes considerably for a team with little margin in Group E.

For now, the answer rests with a knee, a club's medical judgment and a player's own readiness. Gilas has two windows left to secure a Doha place.
