San Antonio Tests New Backcourt Dynamics in Open Scrimmage
The San Antonio Spurs returned to competitive floor action during their annual Silver and Black open scrimmage at the Victory Capital Performance Center. The session marked the team's first coordinated public run following their offseason reset, providing an initial look at rotational spacing, perimeter pairings, and positional balance ahead of the preseason schedule.
Structural Adjustments and Perimeter Alignment
The visual emphasis centered on backcourt integration. With De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and rookie guard Dylan Harper sharing the floor across mixed lineups, San Antonio displayed distinct shifts in perimeter mechanics. Offensive possessions emphasized rapid tempo and downhill penetration, testing how multiple ball-handlers compress interior defenses while maintaining reliable weak-side floor balance.
Defensively, the scrimmage operated as an early stress test for perimeter containment. Castle’s length and point-of-attack lateral shifts formed the primary line of resistance, altering drive angles and allowing recovery help to collapse cleanly along the baseline. How head coach Gregg Popovich calibrates these defensive vectors will dictate the construction of the primary nba starting lineup as training camp progresses.
What Changes Next
San Antonio now moves into its formal preseason exhibition slate to refine transition timing and half-court sets. The primary area to monitor will be how ball distribution and primary defensive matchups are delegated across the Fox-Castle-Harper rotation against opposing starting units.
