Ginebra playoff seeding settled after clinching win over Blackwater

Barangay Ginebra took the direct route. A 23-point loss would have been enough to push the Gin Kings into the PBA Governors' Cup quarterfinals on superior quotient, but they removed the ambiguity themselves with a 101-96 win over Blackwater at Ynares Center-Antipolo. The result settled the Ginebra playoff seeding at No. 3 in Group B and closed the door on two chasing teams.

Ginebra finished group play at 5-5. Meralco, at 4-6, and Blackwater, at 3-7, were effectively eliminated from the Last-8 picture, leaving the Gin Kings to prepare for a best-of-five quarterfinal series against Group A No. 2 San Miguel Beer.

Ginebra playoff seeding decided without a tiebreaker

Coach Tim Cone and his players knew the quotient math favored them. They played as if it did not matter, closing out the Bossing instead of backing into the next round and risking the tiebreaker scenarios that the format allows.

The difference between third and fourth in Group B was not cosmetic. Third place drew San Miguel Beer; fourth place drew NLEX, the top seed in Group A. Ginebra's win chose the first path, and Phoenix, also 5-5, was pushed to No. 4.

Group B standings and the Last-8 cut

Magnolia topped the group at 7-3, with Rain or Shine second at 6-4. Ginebra and Phoenix finished level on record, but the Gin Kings held the higher seed.

  • Magnolia 7-3 (No. 1)
  • Rain or Shine 6-4 (No. 2)
  • Barangay Ginebra 5-5 (No. 3)
  • Phoenix 5-5 (No. 4)

Meralco closed at 4-6 and Blackwater at 3-7, both outside the quarterfinal bracket. For Blackwater, the loss ended a campaign that had kept the Bossing mathematically alive until the final group game.

Rain or Shine enters the playoffs on a winning note

Rain or Shine had already secured second place in Group B before tipping off, but coach Yeng Guiao treated the match as a rehearsal for the next round. The Elasto Painters routed the Fuel Masters 133-103.

"Before the game, my only instruction to the players was that it would be better if we win, so we enter the quarterfinals on a winning note," Guiao said. "That would be a good starting point for us and also for building habits. We want that mentality, playoff mentality, playoff effort. I'm really pushing the young guys because this is also our physical and mental preparation for the playoffs."

Guiao's framing matters in a conference where group play rewards consistency but the quarterfinals reward form. Rain or Shine now carries both a high seed and a convincing closing performance into the knockout rounds.

Jhonard Clarito gives Rain or Shine a timely lift

Clarito produced his best performance of the conference with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists after an uneven start to the tournament. He shared scoring honors with import Aaron Fuller, who also pulled down eight rebounds.

Clarito traced his early struggles to illness. "In our first games I was coming off dengue. My resistance dropped and my conditioning faded a bit. Thankfully it's coming back now; I just keep training so I can catch up for the playoffs," he said.

What the quarterfinal bracket looks like

All four quarterfinal series are best-of-five. Ginebra's third-place finish produced the matchup with San Miguel Beer, while Phoenix's drop to No. 4 sent it to Group A No. 1 NLEX.

  • NLEX (Group A No. 1) vs Phoenix (Group B No. 4)
  • Magnolia (Group B No. 1) vs TNT (Group A No. 4), the defending champion
  • Rain or Shine (Group B No. 2) vs Converge (Group A No. 3)
  • Barangay Ginebra (Group B No. 3) vs San Miguel Beer (Group A No. 2)

For Ginebra, the value of the win over Blackwater was control. The Gin Kings avoided a tiebreaker, avoided a lower seed, and avoided opening the quarterfinals against the top team in the other group.
