NLEX Road Warriors vs Phoenix Fuel Masters, PBA Governors' Cup quarterfinals Game 1 — NLEX escapes 97-92 at Ynares Center Antipolo

NLEX vs Phoenix result

NLEX drew first blood in the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup quarterfinals, grinding out a 97-92 win over Phoenix on Sunday at the Ynares Center Antipolo. The NLEX vs Phoenix result puts the top seed 1-0 up in a best-of-five series that already looks like a long one.

Quarter scores of 29-26, 56-48, 77-73 and 97-92 tell the shape of it. NLEX controlled the middle two periods and led by as much as 15 before spending the last stretch watching the Fuel Masters drag it back to a single possession.

The Road Warriors had answers every time Phoenix threatened across the first three quarters, and the 77-73 cushion going into the fourth looked comfortable. It did not stay that way.

Deonte Burton sets the tone for NLEX

Deonte Burton finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, three blocks and two assists. The defensive numbers are the ones worth circling: Burton stopped chasing the ball and met Phoenix's off-ball pinching at the point of contact, the adjustment most imports here take weeks to make.

His night was less a scoring outburst than a physical one. Burton worked the paint and made Phoenix's bigs hesitate about helping off the weak side, which opened the kick-out looks that Robert Bolick and Schonny Winston converted.

Bolick carried the local load with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. Winston added 13 and Tony Semerad 11, while Alas and Gonzales chipped in six apiece and Herndon and Valdez five each off the bench.

Phoenix comeback runs through Ricci Rivero

Ricci Rivero led Phoenix with 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and Kai Ballungay churned out 20 markers. The support was thinner than the final score suggests: Marcellus Earlington logged 42 minutes for just 14 points, and Ken Tuffin finished with seven.

Earlington's workload is the number Phoenix will study. He was on the floor longer than any other Fuel Master and still finished fourth on the team in scoring, which points to NLEX loading up its help defense on him early.

Phoenix's bench kept it alive, with Mamuyac scoring 11 and Tio nine. Tuffin's jumper trimmed the gap to a solitary point at 90-89 late in the fourth, and after NLEX rebuilt a cushion, Earlington and Tuffin pulled Phoenix within two at 94-92 with 22 seconds left.

Free throws decide the final 22 seconds

NLEX closed it out at the charity stripe, with Gonzales and Burton combining for the last three free throws. Phoenix had forced the game into the scramble it wanted and still could not produce the stop-plus-score sequence that flips a playoff game.

Those free throws came with the game still live, not in garbage time. That is the margin NLEX protected all night: small, repeatable and unglamorous, the kind of cushion that survives a fourth-quarter run.

That is also the difference between a 15-point lead that evaporates and one that holds. NLEX's late possessions were not clean, but they ended at the line instead of in turnovers, and in a game decided by five points that is the whole story.

What to watch in Game 2

The series stays best-of-five and NLEX holds the 1-0 edge. Phoenix's first adjustment is getting Earlington cleaner touches away from NLEX's help, because 14 points across 42 minutes will not beat a top seed four times.

Phoenix also needs Tuffin involved earlier. He finished with seven points but hit the shot that made it 90-89, and the Fuel Masters' late run came when he and Rivero were both attacking instead of waiting on the wing.

For NLEX, the question is whether the fourth-quarter slide was a blip or a warning. They had a 15-point cushion and nearly handed all of it back; another lull against a Phoenix side that shot its way into the game late will cost them.
