Juan Gomez de Liano has been named PBA Player of the Week by the PBA Press Corps for the period October 14 to 18, a recognition that arrived as Converge closed the eliminations with victories over Macau and TNT and secured the No. 3 seeding in Group A of the coming Governors' Cup playoffs.
The FiberXers finished the elimination round at 8-4. The award, voted on by reporters covering the PBA beat, is the fifth weekly citation of Gomez de Liano's young career and the clearest signal yet of how much of Converge's late surge runs through the rookie guard.
Why the PBA Player of the Week nod went to Gomez de Liano
The case was built on two very different performances. Against Macau, Gomez de Liano produced a triple-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. Two nights later, he scored 22 points with eight assists in an overtime win over TNT.

That combination — a stat-sheet game in a blowout and a scoring-and-playmaking game in a tight finish — is what separated him from the rest of the field. The FiberXers had contributions across the roster in both wins, but the rookie's output was the constant.
He won the citation over Scottie Thompson, whose 29-point, 10-rebound, six-assist line helped Barangay Ginebra revive its quarterfinal push with a 106-89 rout of Phoenix, and over his own teammate Alec Stockton, whose scoring outburst was central to the TNT result.
The Macau rout and three franchise records
Converge's 162-108 win over the Giant Pandas was not just a lopsided result. According to PBA stats chief Fidel Mangonon III, it set franchise records for most points in a game, biggest winning margin at 54, and most assists in a game at 53.
The triple-double itself carries wider historical weight. It was Gomez de Liano's fifth of the season, the most ever by a freshman. The last player to reach five in a season was Ginebra import Justin Brownlee three seasons ago, and the last local to do it was Ramon Fernandez, who recorded 25 in 1984.
Those comparisons matter because they place a first-year player alongside imports and a PBA legend on a statistical measure that rewards all-around control rather than shot volume. The 12 assists in that game are the part of the line that speaks most directly to how Converge wants to play.
Overtime escape against TNT Tropang 5G
The second game tested something different. Converge trailed before coming back to win 114-112 in overtime, and Gomez de Liano was involved in nearly every decisive possession.
He hit a clutch four-point basket during the fourth-quarter fightback, then assisted Stockton on the play that forced a deadlock in regulation. In the extra period, he added another pivotal assist to Stockton and a key jumper as the FiberXers put together a 6-2 run over the final 2:39 to complete the comeback.
That sequence is the reason the weekly award is not simply a reward for the triple-double. A blowout win can inflate a stat line; a four-point shot and two late assists in a two-point overtime game cannot.
What the No. 3 seeding means for Converge
The practical value of the two wins is the bracket. Converge enters the Governors' Cup playoffs as the third seed in Group A, a position earned by closing the eliminations with back-to-back victories rather than backing in.
The open question is how the workload shifts in the postseason. Gomez de Liano has already shown he can carry playmaking duties and score late, and opponents now have two games of recent tape showing exactly where Converge wants the ball in the closing minutes.
For a rookie who has already set a freshman triple-double record, the next measure will be whether that production holds when the games are elimination games and the scouting is more specific. The seeding gives Converge room to find out.
