Arsenal Take Early Title Race Advantage
One week into the new season, and we already have our first seismic title race take. Gary Neville believes Arsenal are on track to win the Premier League at a canter, claiming neither Manchester City nor Liverpool are operating anywhere near the level required to mount a serious challenge.
While Arsenal cruised through their opening fixture with a clinical 3-0 victory over Coventry City, their traditional rivals struggled out of the gate. Manchester City needed a stoppage-time strike from Josko Gvardiol to scrape a 2-1 win against Bournemouth in Enzo Maresca's first league game at the helm, while Liverpool had to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw with Newcastle under new boss Andoni Iraola.
Why Neville Thinks the Rivals Are Falling Short
Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former defender pointed out that massive structural changes at the top clubs have created a wide gulf in stability. Following Pep Guardiola's departure and key midfield absences like Rodri, City look vulnerable, while Liverpool face a lengthy transitional rebuild.
"Arsenal should win this league by a street... we've seen Liverpool nearly get beat, we've seen City scrambling for a win at home," Neville explained. "These two clubs were getting nearly 100 points six, seven years ago... but they're nowhere near that standard. This Liverpool team are nowhere near the levels of a Premier League title-winning team — they need a lot of work."
Neville added that despite only one match being played, he has rarely felt more certain about a championship winner: "It's the most sure I've ever been after game one that we're going to see a team be Premier League champions."
Chelsea Tipped as the Closest Challenger
So, if not City or Liverpool, who is going to put pressure on the Gunners? Neville identified Chelsea, now managed by Xabi Alonso, as the side best positioned to challenge for the top spots.
