Alas Pilipinas Drop Fourth Straight at Komaki Park Arena
Tough breaks continue for the Philippine men’s national volleyball team in Japan. Alas Pilipinas absorbed their fourth straight defeat at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Thursday, coming up short against regional rival Indonesia in a hard-fought four-set battle, 23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 21-25, at the Komaki Park Arena in Yokkaichi.
After an unforgiving group stage where the Philippines went winless across three Pool D fixtures, the squad was aiming to reset in the classification round. But Indonesia’s relentless offense proved difficult to slow down when the sets got tight down the stretch.
Indonesia’s Attack Sizzles as Boy Arnez Leads the Way
How efficient was Indonesia’s offense? They converted 59 of their 120 spike attempts on the day, clicking at a sharp 49.2 percent clip. Boy Arnez Arabi took charge with a match-high 20 points, repeatedly finding seams in the Philippine block. Teammate Fauzan Nibras delivered heavy support, tallying 17 points behind 13 attacks, three blocks, and an ace to keep Alas on the back foot.

The Philippines had their bright moments, snatching the second set to level things up at 1-1. Leo Ordiales paced Alas with 13 points, picking up 11 kills and firing two aces. Marck Espejo and Buds Buddin chipped in 11 points each, while Jude Garcia logged 10 markers. Team captain Bryan Bagunas saw only limited action throughout the four frames.
On defense, libero Josh Ybañez threw his body around to keep plays alive, racking up an impressive double-double on the stat sheet with 16 excellent digs and 16 excellent receptions. Still, those extra possessions weren’t quite enough to swing the third and fourth sets.
What’s Next for Alas Pilipinas
With the result, Alas Pilipinas will drop into the 13th-to-16th place classification phase. Up next? A matchup against Kazakhstan this Friday, where the Philippines will look to get into the win column and salvage a higher final standing in the tournament.
