PLDT vs Capital1 looked like another long night for the High Speed Hitters after they dropped the opening set. Then Savi Davison and a wall at the net flipped the script. PLDT took the PVL All-Filipino Conference Siklab Series match 21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 at the FilOil Centre on Saturday.

The win pushed the High Speed Hitters to 1-2 in the conference and, more importantly, stopped the bleeding after straight-set losses to Nxled and Akari. Two hours and 17 minutes of volleyball later, that two-game slide is history.

PLDT vs Capital1 result flips after a slow start

Capital1, the Solar Spikers, came out swinging and stole the first frame 25-21. You could almost hear the groans from the PLDT side. Same script as the last two games, right?

Not this time. PLDT answered with three straight 25-21 sets, tightening its grip as the match wore on. No wild momentum swings in the end — just steady separation in each of the last three frames.

The block did most of the talking. PLDT finished with 12 blocks, nine more than Capital1, and that gap is basically the story of the match.

Savi Davison breaks out with 28 points

Davison had been quiet by her own standards. She was not quiet on Saturday. The PLDT hitter poured in 28 points and chipped in 10 excellent digs and 18 receptions — a full workload on both sides of the ball.

She was honest about the wake-up call afterward. "I think we kind of woke up and realized that everyone is getting better every single day and this season is going to be long and hard considering the teams we have to go up against," Davison said. "We really have to push ourselves out."

That's the thing about a slump. It usually ends when someone decides it ends. Davison made that call in attack, and her passing numbers kept PLDT's offense in rhythm whenever Capital1 served tough.

Kim Dy and Dell Palomata close the net

Davison's points get the headlines, but the defensive stand from Kim Dy and Dell Palomata is what actually broke Capital1. The pair repeatedly shut down the Solar Spikers' top gun, forcing the attackers to hunt for answers that weren't there.

Twelve blocks against three tells you how lopsided that battle was. When a hitter keeps running into hands, the whole attack starts hesitating. That's when the errors creep in and the momentum swings for good.

It also took pressure off PLDT's floor defense. With the block doing its job, the High Speed Hitters could set their transition game and let Davison work against a scattered block instead of a loaded one.

What PLDT takes from a 1-2 start

One win doesn't fix everything. PLDT is still 1-2 in the Siklab Series, and the conference isn't getting any easier. But there's a difference between losing ugly and losing while figuring things out — and the High Speed Hitters looked like a team that figured something out.

The formula is clear enough. Get Davison going, keep the block honest, and let the defense create transition points. Do that consistently and the two-game slide looks like a blip instead of a trend.

For Capital1, the first set showed what the Solar Spikers can do when their top hitter gets clean looks. The next three showed what happens when the block takes that away.
