PNVF Addresses Unpaid Allowances Following Bryan Bagunas Statement
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) issued a formal apology on Sunday after Alas Pilipinas men's volleyball standout Bryan Bagunas disclosed significant financial difficulties affecting the national squad during their Asian Games campaign.
Speaking after the Philippines' straight-sets loss to South Korea on Sunday, Bagunas revealed that players had not received their designated allowances since July. The gap in financial support forced several squad members, many of whom are student-athletes, to borrow funds to cover daily training expenses and routine necessities.
“Naintindihan ko naman kasi most of the players naman is student-athlete. So talaga nagtulong-tulungan lang kami para makapag-ensayo kami nang kumpleto,” Bagunas explained. “Siyempre, pati dito, naging allowance lang namin is from the PSC [Philippine Sports Commission]. Other than that, wala na. As in, sarili-sarili na. Minsan, kami na yung gumagastos ng lunch namin, pagkain namin.”
PNVF Cites Legacy Obligations and Outlines Interim Measures
In response to Bagunas' remarks, PNVF Executive Director Miguel Suarez acknowledged the shortfall, affirming that national team athletes deserve consistent, complete institutional backing. The federation explained that current President Frank Lao assumed control over an organization dealing with substantial inherited liabilities and unresolved obligations.

The PNVF stated that an extensive internal accounting review is underway to audit financial records and reconcile disbursements from previously received funds. To mitigate immediate operational bottlenecks for the Asian Games, the federation noted that Lao advanced resources to settle outstanding allowances, facilitate visas, and secure travel logistics, including an additional requested round-trip ticket for a team member.
“We agree with Mr. Bagunas. These efforts are not enough,” the PNVF said in a statement, pledging to establish structured financial accountability to avoid recurring shortfalls for national athletes.
Upcoming Fixture at Park Arena Komaki
The operational challenges come as the Philippine men's team navigates a demanding international schedule. Following their three-set defeat against South Korea, Alas Pilipinas will return to the court on Monday to play China at Park Arena Komaki in Japan.
