Turbulent Asian Games Campaign Exposes Deep PNVF Debt
Philippine volleyball is once again under intense scrutiny. While the Alas Pilipinas national teams are battling in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, a major storm off the court has captured national attention following explosive revelations about unpaid athlete allowances.
The controversy erupted right after the Alas Pilipinas men's indoor volleyball squad suffered a tough 3-0 opening defeat against South Korea. Men's team captain Bryan Bagunas publicly disclosed that players had not received their allowances since July, revealing that several athletes had to borrow money just to prepare for the Asiad. The revelation sparked widespread outcry on social media and prompted a formal statement from Malacañang confirming an investigation into the claims.
Frank Lao Steps Up Amid P30-Million Inherited Deficit
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) responded with an apology and a direct assurance from new president Frank Lao that all shortcomings will be addressed. Lao took the federation's reins on August 10, following a chaotic 10-month stretch that saw leadership rotate between Ramon "Tats" Suzara, Tony Boy Liao, and finally Lao after a series of elections and a temporary FIVB suspension last May over governance issues.

Upon taking office just a month before the Asian Games, Lao inherited an organization buried in over P30 million of debt. Demonstrating serious commitment as a sports patron, Lao has already shelled out roughly P10 million from his personal funds to settle outstanding back pay and cover team expenses for the Asian Games. More than P20 million in debt remains, which Lao aims to resolve as he works to stabilize the federation.
“Lao appealed to Bagunas and the players to understand the situation. He didn’t point a finger to anyone responsible but accepted the blame despite his innocence,” with Lao promising a full review to fix the federation's issues.
Nagoya Contingent and What Happens Next
The Philippines sent a complete Alas Pilipinas contingent to Nagoya across indoor and beach disciplines:
- Alas Pilipinas Men’s Indoor Team: 12 players
- Alas Pilipinas Women’s Indoor Team: 12 players
- Beach Volleyball: 8 players (two men, six women)
Officials confirmed that Bagunas had not directly approached the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) leadership prior to making his public remarks. Once the national delegation returns home from Nagoya, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino and the PSC are scheduled to confer directly with PNVF leadership and the athletes to iron out the financial backlog and establish long-term stability for Philippine volleyball.
