NLEX Secures Quarterfinal Berth with League-Record 60-Point Rout
The NLEX Road Warriors marked their return from a 53-day PBA Governors' Cup hiatus with an emphatic statement, setting a Philippine Basketball Association record for the largest margin of victory in league history. In a commanding 138-78 defeat of the Macau Giant Pandas at Ninoy Aquino Stadium, newly acquired import Deonte Burton made an immediate impact following an urgent roster substitution.
Roster Adjustment Follows Injury to DeQuan Jones
NLEX was forced into the import market last August when DeQuan Jones suffered an injury right before the mid-conference break. Providing an effective injury update and roster solution, head coach Jimmy Alapag leveraged his prior coaching relationships with the Sacramento Kings and the NBA G League's Stockton Kings to sign Burton.
Burton required minimal transition time. Playing just 24 minutes and resting for the entire fourth quarter, the versatile forward compiled 22 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists, and six steals. Burton initiated the offense early, scoring 16 points in the opening quarter to steer the Road Warriors to an early 38-23 advantage.

“We’re fortunate DB was available and came to join us for the rest of the conference,” Alapag stated. “Super excited to have him. We worked together before and I know the type of player and the type of person he is and I think he fits our team.”
Statistical Dominance and League Record
The 60-point differential surpasses the previous PBA record of 56 points, established when Rain or Shine defeated Blackwater 151-95 on March 31 during the Commissioner’s Cup. NLEX displayed balanced scoring across the rotation, with Schonny Winston contributing a team-high 25 points, supported by Robert Bolick (14 points), Kevin Alas (10 points), LJ Gonzales (10 points), and Tony Semerad (10 points).
The victory elevates NLEX to an 8-2 record in Group A, securing a quarterfinal spot with two preliminary round games left on their schedule. Conversely, the Macau Giant Pandas dropped to 2-7.
Context and Conference Outlook
While the lopsided result underscores NLEX's offensive efficiency and successful integration of Burton, maintaining intensity through extended schedule interruptions remains a key challenge for league contenders. Alapag emphasized that team focus was paramount heading into the postseason push.
In the evening's second fixture, defending champion TNT Tropang 5G improved their standing to 5-4 with a 116-92 victory over the Terrafirma Dyip (3-6), led by a 31-point conference debut from Calvin Oftana. Both NLEX and TNT now prepare for the critical closing stages of the elimination round.
