Magnolia TNT quarterfinals set after Hotshots clinch Group B top seed
The Magnolia TNT quarterfinals pairing is the reward the Hotshots earned for finishing on top of Group B, and it is a harder draw than the seeding suggests. Magnolia clinched the No. 1 spot with a 107-103 win over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Wednesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
That sends the Hotshots into a quarterfinal against the defending PBA Governors' Cup champion, TNT Tropang 5G, which closed the group stage as the fourth seed of Group A. On paper it is a first seed meeting a fourth seed. In practice it is a meeting with a roster that spent much of the conference incomplete.
TNT Tropang 5G boosted by returning Hollis-Jefferson and Oftana
TNT finished fourth in Group A despite Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Calvin Oftana missing a chunk of the import-laden conference with their respective injuries. Both are returning for the playoffs, and Magnolia has not faced TNT at any point this conference.

That gap in scouting is what makes the matchup awkward. Magnolia carries a six-game winning streak into the series, but that run was built without a look at TNT at full strength. Tenorio noted that Oftana in particular has rested heavily while recovering.
Playoff history favors TNT in recent quarterfinal meetings
This will be the third time in the last four conferences that Magnolia and TNT meet in the quarterfinals, and the Tropang 5G won the previous two. In the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup, Magnolia held a twice-to-beat advantage and was swept.
In the following All-Filipino conference, the advantage flipped to TNT, and Magnolia could not overcome it. Tenorio said the history could serve as extra motivation for TNT, while noting that the composition of both rosters has changed since those series.
Tenorio says the quarterfinals are the hardest stage to cross
Magnolia's coach was direct about the size of the task. "Of course TNT, they have an extra boost because they're a very seasoned team, very, very well coached, with their championship experience," Tenorio told reporters. "Going into the quarterfinals, we just have to be ready and we have to be up to the challenge."
He also framed the series as a personal test. Chot Reyes, TNT's coach, has been named Coach of the Year multiple times, and Tenorio described facing him as a big challenge for a new head coach. "It's a big challenge for us, not only for me, but for the whole team," he said.
On momentum, Tenorio was careful. "Carrying the momentum is a big thing for us. But beating TNT is probably going to be a big question for us," he said, adding that his team has not been playing to its full potential and will need to do so collectively.
What to watch when the Hotshots meet TNT
Magnolia has not reached the semifinal round since barging into the PBA Season 48 Commissioner's Cup finals, and the quarterfinals have been the wall. Tenorio put it plainly: "Whether twice-to-beat, advantage, disadvantage, whether best-of-three or best-of-five, that's the hardest to cross, the quarterfinals."
The question is whether a six-game streak and a top seed mean more than a playoff history that has gone TNT's way twice in a row. Magnolia's answer will come against a team that has had time to heal.
