PBA Governors' Cup quarterfinals
After 107 days of group play and a stop-and-go elimination round, the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup is down to its Final 8. The quarterfinals open at Ynares Center Antipolo with all eight teams standing on the same starting line.
That is the big change from the last two conferences. This quarterfinal round is best-of-five across the board, with no twice-to-beat advantage for the higher seeds and no twice-to-win disadvantage for the lower ones. Nobody gets a free pass, and nobody starts in a hole.
NLEX and Phoenix dispute first blood at 5:15 p.m., with Magnolia and TNT chasing the same 1-0 head start at 7:30 p.m. Two games, two series, and a race to three wins instead of a one-night knockout.

Magnolia vs TNT
Magnolia finished as the top seed of Group B and drew defending champion TNT, the fourth-ranked squad out of Group A, as the price of that No. 1 spot. The Tropang 5G are led by Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.
Magnolia coach LA Tenorio did not pretend the bracket was kind. "Katulad ng sinasabi ko sa mga players ang pinakamahirap tawirin is the quarters, whether you have advantage or disadvantage, whether it's a best-of-three, best-of-five, it's the hardest part," he said.
In English: the hardest stage to get past is the quarterfinals, whether you hold the advantage or not, whether the series runs best-of-three or best-of-five. Tenorio framed the TNT pairing as the tax that comes with topping Group B.
San Miguel vs Barangay Ginebra
The other heavyweight pairing pits reigning Philippine Cup titlist San Miguel, Group A No. 2, against current Commissioner's Cup kingpin Barangay Ginebra, Group B No. 3. Two title-winning cores, one best-of-five series, and no seeding cushion for either side.
Under the old setup, the higher seed could survive a bad night and still close the series out. Here the series has to be won three separate times, which shifts the premium onto adjustments between games rather than one hot shooting night.
NLEX, Phoenix, Rain or Shine and Converge
On the other half of the draw, Group A No. 1 NLEX meets Group B No. 4 Phoenix, while Group B No. 2 Rain or Shine faces Group A No. 3 Converge.
Three of those four are chasing a first finals appearance and a first title: the Road Warriors, the Fuel Masters and the FiberXers. The Elasto Painters are out to reach the championship series again after more than a decade away.
That makes the NLEX-Phoenix opener the most consequential Game 1 on the card for teams with no deep playoff history to lean on. A 1-0 lead in a best-of-five is a real cushion; a 0-1 hole means three wins in four tries.
What to watch in Game 1
With the twice-to-beat safety net gone, a Game 1 loss no longer forces a team to sweep two straight to survive. It does, however, hand the opponent a 1-0 lead in a race to three, and that changes how coaches manage rotations late.
Tenorio's point cuts both ways. The quarterfinals are the hardest part regardless of seeding, and this conference's format makes that literally true: eight teams, four series, no head start for anyone.
