The Rain or Shine Converge quarterfinal is set, and Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao is treating it as a meeting with a team he considers built for a title. Rain or Shine booked the best-of-five series with a 133-103 rout of the Phoenix Fuel Masters on Friday evening, closing its elimination-round schedule on a winning note.
Converge arrives on a five-game winning streak. Game 1 is scheduled for Tuesday, 5:15 p.m., at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Rain or Shine Converge quarterfinal follows a 133-103 rout
The 30-point margin over Phoenix gave Guiao the entry he had asked for: a quarterfinal berth secured through a win rather than a loss. Rain or Shine now moves into a longer series than the one it played the last time these two clubs met in the playoffs.

That previous meeting came in the quarterfinals of the PBA Season 49 Commissioner's Cup, a best-of-three round in which the Elasto Painters recovered from a 0-1 deficit. The current format gives both teams more room to adjust between games.
Guiao calls Converge a championship-caliber lineup
Speaking after the Phoenix game, Guiao did not frame Converge as an underdog or as a young team still finding its way. He described the FiberXers roster as one assembled for a championship, with experience and cohesion the only apparent gaps.
"Converge is our opponent, and their lineup is championship-caliber. What they probably lack is just experience and a bit more gelling. But their lineup is very balanced. They have height, they have speed, they have shooting," Guiao said.
He added that the team's movement has improved noticeably and that an earlier problem with fragmented teamwork appears to have been resolved.
"I think lately they've been moving really well. It looks like they've solved their old problem where their teamwork was a bit fragmented. But now you can see that team is whole," he said.
Five-game streak and a Season 49 precedent
Converge enters the quarterfinals on a five-game winning streak, the kind of run that changes how an opponent prepares. Guiao pointed to accumulated experience as the difference between this version of the FiberXers and the one that was still adjusting to the league.
"They have more experience now, and their team has gelled. They've learned a lot, because when they were newer they were still adjusting. But now, I think, they've got a feel for the game in the PBA," he said.
"In terms of materials, you won't look for anything. All their materials are there. That's why they're tougher now."
The Season 49 quarterfinal is the only recent playoff reference point between the two clubs, and it cuts both ways. Rain or Shine won that series after dropping the opener, but it did so in a format that allowed less time for Converge to correct course.
Building playoff habits before Game 1
Guiao said his pregame message to the Rain or Shine roster was about the manner of entry, not only the result.
"Before the game, what I asked of our players was this: it's better if we win and enter the quarterfinals of the playoffs on a winning note. So that would be a good starting point for us," he said.
"Then just building habits. We want our mentality to already be a playoff mentality. Our effort, playoff effort. So I'm really pushing the players to think this is already the playoffs. It's like our mental and physical preparation for the playoffs."
That framing matters in a league where the gap between elimination-round form and playoff form often decides a short series. Rain or Shine's win over Phoenix is the evidence Guiao can point to; Converge's five straight wins are the counterargument.
What to watch when the series opens
The matchup sets a balanced, tall and fast Converge roster against a Rain or Shine side that has just found what its coach calls playoff-level effort. Guiao's own scouting note — height, speed and shooting on the other side — suggests the Elasto Painters will have to defend multiple actions rather than key on a single scorer.
Experience is the variable Guiao identified as Converge's remaining weakness, and it is the one a best-of-five can expose. A longer series reduces the value of one hot shooting night and puts more weight on adjustments made between games, an area where the FiberXers' growing familiarity with the PBA will be tested.
