RHJ injury return lifts TNT Tropang 5G over Magnolia Hotshots

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored 39 points with 15 rebounds in his fourth game back from a 10-month injury layoff as TNT Tropang 5G beat Magnolia Hotshots 91-73 for a 2-0 quarterfinal lead. Coach Chot Reyes credited improved defense, holding Magnolia to 33.8 percent shooting. TNT can sweep into the semifinals on Saturday.

TNT Tropang 5G vs Magnolia Hotshots PBA quarterfinal — Rondae Hollis-Jefferson injury return in English

The RHJ injury return reached its most productive point yet, with Rondae Hollis-Jefferson putting up 39 points and 15 rebounds as TNT Tropang 5G beat Magnolia Hotshots 91-73 at Ynares Center-Antipolo. The win gave the defending champions a 2-0 lead in the race-to-three quarterfinal series of the PBA Season 49 Governors' Cup.

Hollis-Jefferson added three blocks, two assists and two steals against a single turnover, finishing with an efficiency rating of 39 — the strongest line of his conference so far. It came in only his fourth game since returning from a 10-month injury layoff, a detail that frames both the result and the risk attached to it.

TNT took the opener 92-70 last Sunday. The Hotshots now need three straight wins to survive, while the Tropang 5G can close the series out on Saturday and sweep into the best-of-five semifinals.

RHJ injury return reshapes the TNT Tropang 5G rotation

Hollis-Jefferson, a three-time champion and former Best Import awardee, described the performance as a shared product rather than an individual one. "It's a collective effort," he said, pointing to support from Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, who added 11 points.

He also said the group is preparing beyond the immediate fixture. "I always tell the guys we're not preparing just for the next game, we're preparing like this is Game 7 of the finals. We want to be ready everytime we step on the floor," he said.

That framing matters for a player whose availability has been the central question around TNT's campaign. Four games into his comeback, the workload is heavy but the output has been efficient rather than volume-dependent, with a single turnover across his Game 2 minutes.

Defense carries TNT Tropang 5G in Game 2

Coach Chot Reyes credited the defensive end rather than the scoring burst. "One word was on our board — Better. We wanted to make sure we come out with better effort, better defense, better everything than Game 1," he said.

Reyes noted that Magnolia actually scored more in Game 2 than in the opener, 73 against 70, but shot worse overall. "We're able to hold them to a lower field goal (33.8 percent from 37.8 in the opener)," he said.

RR Pogoy finished with 10 points and Calvin Oftana took on a larger defensive assignment, with both spending significant time on Magnolia reinforcement KJ Buffen. That matchup work does not show up in the box score but shaped how the Hotshots had to generate offense.

Magnolia Hotshots fight back before the break

The Hotshots did not fold quietly. They cut into TNT's margin and forced Reyes into a timeout and a reminder to his players about composure.

The response was a 21-4 run that restored the double-digit cushion and effectively settled the game. "Most important part was our ability to remain calm in that situation," Reyes said.

For Magnolia, the problem is now structural rather than momentary. A team that scores at its usual rate has been held well below it twice in a row, and the series offers limited room to adjust before elimination.

NLEX Road Warriors move one win from the semifinals

In the other quarterfinal, NLEX Road Warriors beat Phoenix 124-117 in Game 2 behind 31 points each from Robert Bolick and Schonny Winston. The Road Warriors closed with a 31-23 burst to follow up their 97-92 win in the opener.

Like TNT, NLEX is now one victory away from the Final Four, with both series following the same 2-0 pattern after two games.

What to watch in Game 3

The immediate question is whether TNT closes the series on Saturday or whether Magnolia, playing to extend its season, forces a deciding game. The second is how Reyes manages Hollis-Jefferson's minutes as the games grow more consequential, given the length of the layoff behind him.

Both answers depend on the same variable: whether the defensive standard Reyes set after Game 1 holds for a third straight outing.
